We built modern and elegant yacht HMI using Qt, QML and embedded Linux capabilities delivering a production-ready foundations for marine applications.
Depending on the board, the same application runs on two different embedded Linux setups: it is either a custom image built with the Yocto Project or Toradex's Torizon OS. A custom Yocto build gives full control over every layer of the system for production-grade and secure devices. On the other hand Torizon OS offers a container-based, faster path to deployment approach with ready OTA updates and fleet management features.
Because this is a reference build with no connected marine sensors, we built a live-data simulation layer so the full interface can be demonstrated end-to-end and that it models the operation of a real ship Gauges and indicators update every second with controlled variation. The same architecture accepts real sensor input in a production deployment.
Animations are present across nearly every screen, including gauges, compass movement, water levels, lighting indicators, controls, and the radio dial. Carefully managed transitions and consistent easing create a fluid, desktop like experience, which is particularly impressive on limited embedded hardware.
Pages are loaded only when needed and removed when the user navigates away, reducing memory and GPU usage while ensuring each screen opens in a clean state. Depending on the target platform, the application can use video, animated GIFs, or static backgrounds. Carefully selected resources and targeted optimizations keep motion, transitions, and visual effects smooth, even on constrained embedded hardware.

The real work was fitting a graphics-heavy interface like live yacht preview, interactive map or all the animations onto embedded hardware like the Renesas and i.MX8 boards, where GPU and memory are limited. On desktop everything runs; on the target, every animation and effect has to earn its cost.
