Bio-Rad Laboratories is a global leader in life science research and clinical diagnostics. PCR|ONE is its near-patient molecular diagnostics platform, designed to deliver results in minutes rather than hours. We worked side by side with Bio-Rad's teams across France, the USA, and Poland.

The challenge

We joined when the project had almost no one to move it forward. PCR|ONE hardware was highly advanced - a novel method promising the fastest analysis on the market - and it needed daily, on-site collaboration to keep going.

  • Engineering capacity. We stepped in when the project had not enough expertise, and had to build momentum fast.
  • Deep cross-domain work. Daily, on-site cooperation with bio-analytics, electronics, hardware designers, and medical requirements specialists.
  • Architecture for clusters. The core technical challenge was re-designing the architecture so devices could work together in clusters.

What we delivered

Software architecture and development

We refactored the codebase heavily to boost test performance and stability, and worked on the application's logic and GUI.

Firmware and hardware integration

We coded low-level aspects too - communication with sensors and integration of electronic components such as the camera.

Cybersecurity

We ran a cybersecurity risk analysis, performed threat modelling, and compiled the full list of cybersecurity requirements.

Cluster communication

We introduced an advanced inter-device communication system, letting several devices operate together as one cluster.

Custom Linux image

We validated MPU boards and prepared a custom Linux image for the chosen one with the Yocto Project.

Co-creating requirements

We actively worked on requirements in Jama, shaping their form rather than just following them.
