Ambulance HMI

A modern ambulance HMI built entirely in C with LVGL. A real-world medical use case showcasing sleek, high-end UI on performance-critical embedded hardware - STM32H757XIH6 with just 2 MB Flash and 1 MB RAM.

Engineering challenge

The greatest challenge was working within the hardware's strict 2 MB Flash and 1 MB RAM constraints. Every asset, font, and widget had to be carefully sized and managed - one careless allocation or unfreed animation in C is enough to corrupt the UI or exhaust memory entirely, with no safety net that a higher-level language would provide.

Comment from our Engineer

I built this ambulance dashboard in pure C with LVGL and was amazed by what it's capable of. Writing everything in C was tedious at times, but the concepts are simple - and once you understand them, it becomes rewarding. The demo impressed everyone at Embedded World 2026 , they were surprised to see such a beautiful UI running on just 2 MB Flash and 1 MB RAM Mateusz Fejcher - Software Engineer

Supported boards

  • Tested and verified on the STM32 Embedded Display, running on STM32H757XIH6.
  • Portable to any LVGL-supported target.
  • Porting to another STM32H7 board typically requires only replacing the display and touch drivers.

System Key Features

The entire interface is built in pure C, with LVGL as the graphics library. No C++, no heavy framework, and no additional runtime-just lightweight, efficient code running close to the hardware.

Running directly on the STM32H757XIH6 with no operating system or scheduler, the application uses a streamlined LVGL loop for predictable, low-overhead performance. Despite tight hardware limits of just 2 MB Flash and 1 MB RAM, it delivers a smooth 30 FPS interface through carefully optimized assets, fonts, and widgets - showing that a polished modern UI can run efficiently on resource-constrained hardware.

Designed for a 10.1" Riverdi STM32 Embedded Display powered by the STM32H757XIH6. The high-resolution TFT platform is built for demanding indoor and outdoor applications, making it a strong fit for real-world embedded systems.

Custom Figma design

The complete Figma design for this project was created in-house by the Somco Software team. From the overall visual direction to individual interface components, every element was designed by us with usability, consistency, and the target platform in mind.

We also offer UI/UX design as a service - Somco can create a complete, implementation-ready Figma design tailored to your product and hardware.
